The Institute of Volcanology and Seismology of Philippines raised the alert level for the Taal volcano near Manila today, due to the “increased activity” observed.
The Institute raised the alert level to level 3 of the five-point scale, after volcano a column of smoke began to rise and seismic tremors were recorded around 7.22 p.m. (local time).
The volcano, located in the province of Batanga, 66 km south of Manila, a “limited well-magmatic eruption was recorded, followed by continuous well-magmatic activity that caused smoke to erupt at a distance of 1,500 meters and was accompanied by volcanic earthquakes”reports the Institute.
“The magma invasion” in the main crater “could then lead to successive explosions,” the experts warned.
The institute advised residents to stay away from the volcanowhile warning airlines to avoid flights over it.
The Taal volcano, one of the most active in the Philippines, last erupted in January 2020, displacing some 380,000 people and wreaking havoc on farms, homes and roads in Batanga Province.
