Shortly after the release of Windows 11, Microsoft began to rework system applications. So, for example, the software giant has made several visual improvements to Notepad, which has remained virtually unchanged since Windows 95, but functionally there is little that has changed. Now, apparently, the company is preparing the next update of the text editor with a very useful feature.
According to a senior product manager at Microsoft, Notepad in Windows 11 will get support for tabs. His tweet was deleted a few minutes later, but users managed to save a screenshot posted by a company employee. The image clearly shows that two tabs are open in Notepad. The most interesting thing is the privacy warning at the top of the text editor window: “do not discuss features or take screenshots.” Apparently it didn’t work.
The screenshot proves that this feature is in the testing phase and may be available to Windows 11 Insiders in the near future. Considering how much users have become accustomed to tabs in browsers, it’s not surprising that they are starting to appear in other applications as well. Earlier this year, Microsoft added tab support to File Explorer in Windows 11, and before that, it had been testing a similar feature in Windows 10 for a long time, but actually abandoned the idea.
Notepad is one of the oldest system applications that appeared in 1983 to promote the use of the mouse in MS-DOS. It’s surprising that it’s still used so much today, given that it’s basically the same simple text editor it was two decades ago.
