The filmmaker Taika Waititi revealed, in an interview with the “SmartLess” podcast, that he had no interest in entering the Marvel Universe, but that he agreed to direct “Thor: Ragnarok” (2017) because I was poor at the time, I had just had my second child and needed money. The episode aired on Monday (27).
“I had no interest in making one of these films. It wasn’t in my plans for my career as an author. But I was poor and had just had a second child, and I thought, ‘You know what, this would be a great opportunity to feed these kids,’” he said.
He said he had never read superhero comics as a child. “That was the comic I would pick up and go ‘Ugh’,” he said.
“And ‘Thor,’ let’s face it — was probably the least popular franchise,” he added.
When asked if Marvel executives were afraid to bring him in, Waititi responded: “I don’t think there’s room left for it. I thought, ‘Well, they called me, this is really rock bottom.’”
The filmmaker was also responsible for directing “Thor: Love and Thunder” (2022), but stated that he should not return to the franchise.
“I know I won’t be involved,” he said of the fifth film’s directing duties. “I’m going to focus on these other movies that I’ve signed on for… But I love Marvel, I love working with them. I love Chris [Hemsworth, protagonista dos filmes].”
“I would never feel like they were betraying me,” he said about if Marvel hired another writer-director for a new feature film. “Thor” .
“We’re in an open relationship and it’s like they want to see other people, I’m happy about that. I would still go back to bed with them one day.”
