A terrible train accident happened at around 9:30 a.m. (1:30 a.m. GMT) on Friday morning on Taiwan’s eastern rail line near the coastal city of Hualien. An eight-car train, connecting Taipei to Taitung, and carrying some 350 passengers, derailed. The accident occurred at the start of a long public holiday weekend when Taiwan’s roads and railroads are usually crowded. According to the railway police, there are at least 36 dead. 61 people were taken to hospital. A balance sheet that could get even heavier. Firefighters reported many people showing no signs of life.
A first assessment reported four deaths on arrival of help. The Rescue Operations Management Center said that rescuers were trying to reach, inside the tunnel where the tragedy took place, four wagons that were difficult to access and suffered heavy damage. Police said 72 people were still stranded in these cars.
A train very frequented by tourists
A short video shot inside the tunnel showed rescuers arriving at the scene and a door warped by the violence of the shock.
Taiwan’s Eastern Railway is usually a popular tourist attraction located along the coastline, a beautiful area.
By borrowing multiple tunnels and bridges, it winds through imposing mountains and very deep gorges before descending the valley of Huadong.
