The United States Geological Survey (USGS) warned of a possible tsunami within a radius of 300 kilometers off the coast of Taiwan, moments after a magnitude 6.9 earthquake was detected in the southeast of the island on Sunday (18).
The Japan Meteorological Agency also issued a tsunami warning for Miyako Island in the East China Sea after the earthquake that struck Yujing District in rural Taiwan and was 10 kilometers deep.
Three people are trapped under the rubble of a building that collapsed as a result of the earthquake, the island’s Central News Agency (CNA) reported. A fourth person was also trapped but managed to be rescued.
The earthquake also caused the derailment of a train in the area, but there were no casualties in the incident, the Taiwan Railway Administration said.
Kolas Yotaka, a former presidential spokeswoman who is running in local elections in Hualien County, said damage was also reported at a local school.
