A total of 125 Chinese military aircraft and 17 warships were involved in its new round of military exercises near Taiwan on Monday, Taiwan’s Defense Ministry said.
Chinese forces have not entered Taiwan’s contiguous zone, the ministry said, adding that it is paying close attention to the movements of China’s rocket forces.
China’s military launched a new round of drills near Taiwan earlier in the day, saying it was a warning of “separatist acts by Taiwan independence forces”, drawing condemnation from the governments in Taipei and the US.
The Chinese military’s Eastern Theater Command said the “Joint Sword-2024B” exercises were taking place in the Taiwan Strait and in areas north, south and east of Taiwan.
Chinese warship, destroyer and aircraft formations were approaching Taiwan “in close proximity from different directions,” focusing on sea-to-air combat readiness patrols, blockading key ports and areas, attacking sea and land targets, added the command.
The Chinese military later said the exercises had concluded.
