Taiwan: Strong 6.1 magnitude earthquake felt in Taipei

A magnitude 6.1 earthquake shook the region off the east coast of Taiwan today.

The tremor was felt in the capital Taipei, where buildings were shaken, but there is currently no information on damage.

The epicenter was reported at 27.5 kilometers south of the east coast of Taiwan, almost halfway between the coast of Hualien County and the Japanese island of Yonaguni, the Meteorological Agency said in a statement. that the earthquake was felt throughout Taiwan.

The German Geosciences Research Center (GFZ) also said the quake had a magnitude of 6.1.

Earlier, however, the Japanese institute NIED announced that it was a vibration of 8 degrees.

Taiwan is close to the point where two tectonic plates meet and is prone to earthquakes.

In 2016, more than 100 people were killed in an earthquake that struck southern Taiwan, while a magnitude 7.3 earthquake caused the death of more than 2,000 people in 1999.
