Taiwan: Taipei ‘does not want to close the door’ in Beijing

Taiwan does not want to close the door on China and is willing to have contacts with Beijing in a spirit of goodwill but on an equal footing and without political conditions, Prime Minister Su Zheng-Chang said today.

Relations between Taipei and Beijing, which claims Taiwan is Chinese territory, are at the lowest level in decades, with China stepping up political and military pressure on the island to accept its sovereignty.

Earlier in the day, at a security forum in Singapore, China’s defense minister said that the Chinese government was seeking “peaceful reunification” with Taiwan but that it had “other options”.

Speaking to reporters, Su said Taiwan had always maintained a spirit of goodwill towards China.

“As long as there is equality, reciprocity and not political conditions, we are willing to have goodwill contacts with China,” Xu said, reiterating a position that President Xi Ying-wen has repeatedly made public.

“In terms of China’s harassment of Taiwan by military aircraft, warships, irrational repression and political action, the most irrational is China,” he added. “Taiwan does not want to close the door on China. It is China that uses various means to oppress and deal with Taiwan in an irrational way.”
