Taiwan’s prosecutors suspect Bitmain of violating employment laws

Chinese mining hardware manufacturer Bitmain has caught the attention of Taiwan’s prosecutors. Law enforcement officials suspect the company of violating local employment laws.

According to Taiwan Central News Agency, the Chinese company had close ties with two Taiwanese firms and used them to find mining chip engineers. The offices of Taiwanese companies were ransacked and nineteen employees were questioned by prosecutors.

Over the past three years, law enforcement officials believe Bitmain has hired more than a hundred Taiwanese mining chip engineers through two local firms over the past three years. To attract engineers, the Chinese manufacturer offered pay twice as much as local companies TSMC and MediaTek. The documents of local firms have been seized by prosecutors and will be thoroughly checked.

The microelectronics industry is critical to Taiwan’s economy and is protected by local intellectual property laws. Therefore, when doing business with third-party companies, local firms need to report this to regulators. In addition, Chinese companies are prohibited from investing in semiconductor manufacturing in Taiwan or starting local subsidiaries in the industry.

Recall that at the beginning of the year, Bitmain co-founder Jihan Wu announced his departure from the company after a long struggle for power with Micree Zhan.
