Ok Samantha. Even if it was (very hard get over it. Because, let’s face it, much of the revolutionary headlines of the late 1990s – “Women finally talk about sex like men” – was his credit. But we wanted to give him the benefit of the doubt. But now we learn that the return of Sex and the city – a new series entitled And Just Like That always for HBO – will be without Mr. Big. The always well informed writes it Page Six: «Chris Noth will not be part of the reboot». Point.
And who was already skeptical about the return of the four (pardon, three), now asks: it can exist Sex and the city without him? The answer we feel like giving is “no“. And not because Mr. Big is one of the protagonists of the series, but for the opposite reason. Chris Noth is not seen in all the episodes, the protagonists are always and indisputably them, the women – Carrie, Charlotte, Miranda, Samantha – the point of view is always theirs. Even he says it himself: “A man can count himself lucky if he comes fourth,” referring to Carrie’s life.
But Mr. Big, although often not present, though never understood from his point of view, has always been there. It is an idea, more than a character. It’s the passionate love, the wrong one, the one Carrie doesn’t stop believing in. He says he is unavailable, makes the wrong choices, disappears, changes his mind, messes up, picks up the pieces and then vanishes again. But it never “dies”. Carrie moves on with her life, but we fans know that in the end she won’t really marry Aidan, and neither will the Russian. It is not clear why, but we are convinced that Mr. Big is the one for you. We know this from the first meeting, when she picks up a handful of condoms that had fallen out of her purse from a Manhattan sidewalk. Or again, when he shows up at her house with a car – with a driver – full of red balloons, but lacking what she would like to hear.
And then there is another (big) problem: if Samantha – reluctantly – can be made to disappear, suggesting that a friendship has ended at some point, what should happen to Mr. Big? Because if the series ended with him bringing her back to New York from Paris, ready to leave Napa Valley, and to (finally) start a life together – so much so that he stops being Mr. Big and becomes “John” -, the movies then showed us Carrie and Big MARRIED. One wonders then, Will 50-year-old Carrie be a widow? Or you have to tell fans of Sex and the City which – despite six seasons, 94 episodes and two films – eventually between the two it did not work. And it doesn’t seem like a good thing to say. Especially to all the incurable romantics like Charlotte.
