The Taliban have banned women’s beauty salons in Afghanistan, said Mohammad Sidik Akif Mahajar, spokesman for the government’s Ministry of Virtue and Vice. With this decision, social inequality in the country deepens and the promise about the moderation of restrictive rules against women is broken.
This restriction of the freedoms of Afghan women and girls is added to the ban on higher education, their presence in public spaces and the opportunity for employment with fair wages. As expected, the new standard has been rejected by the rest of the world.
Mohammad Sidik did not explain why this measure had been taken, but shared the circular in which notice was given on the matter. In said document, dated June 24, Hibatullah Akhundzada, Taliban supreme leader, prohibits the opening and attendance of beauty salons throughout the Afghan country. In addition, he gives a deadline of one month to permanently cease said activity.
What is surprising about this measure is that it comes just a few days after Akhundzada stated that her government has done what is necessary to improve the lives of women in the country.
The owners of these premises have shown their disagreement, because in some cases, this business is their only livelihood.
Every day (the Taliban) impose limits on women. Why do they only attack women? Aren’t we human? Don’t we have the right to work or live?

On the other hand, Richard Bennett, special envoy in Afghanistan, informed the United Nations Human Rights Council that the situation of women in that country “was one of the worst in the world.”
Gross, systematic and institutionalized discrimination against women and girls is at the heart of the Taliban’s ideology and power.
So far, the United Nations Organization has not mentioned whether it will take action on the matter, but various feminist groups are already beginning to exert pressure.
