O Taliban told airlines in Afghanistan that women cannot board domestic or international flights without a male escort, two sources told Reuters on Sunday.
The measurement takes place after Taliban backtracking on its past commitment to opening high schools for girls, a turnaround that shocked many Afghans and was condemned by aid agencies and foreign governments.
On Friday (25), the United States canceled scheduled meetings with officials from the Taliban on important economic issues due to its decision on Wednesday (23).
The sources, who are not named for security reasons, said the Ministry of Propagation of Virtue and Prevention of Vice sent airlines a letter on Saturday informing them of the new restrictions.
They added that unaccompanied women who had already booked tickets will be able to travel this Sunday and Monday (28). Some women with tickets were stopped at the Kabul airport on Saturday, the sources said.
Spokespeople for the Ministry of Propagation of Virtue and Prevention of Vice and the Afghan Ministry of Culture and Information did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
A government spokesperson for the Taliban had previously said that women traveling abroad to study must be accompanied by a male relative.
