Talks between pro-Kurdish party and imprisoned Ocalan proposed by Erdogan’s ally Bahtceli

Devlet Bakhceli, head of the Nationalist Action Party and a key ally of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, expanded his proposal to end the 40-year conflict with Kurdish rebels by proposing today that the pro-Kurdish party in the Turkish parliament hold direct talks with the jailed Kurdish militant leader Abdullah Ocalan. Bakhceli made the proposal to parliament a month after he proposed that Ocalan announce the end of the Kurdish insurgency in exchange for the possibility of his release. Erdogan had described Bakhceli’s initial proposal as a “historic window of opportunity”, but has not spoken of any peace process. Ocalan, founder of the outlawed Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK), is imprisoned on Imrali Island, south of Istanbul, after being arrested 25 years ago. “We expect face-to-face contact between Imrali and the DEM team to take place without delay, and we resolutely repeat our call,” Bakhceli told his party’s lawmakers during a meeting […]
