International talks on the future of the Iran nuclear deal will resume in Vienna on Monday, after the parties took a break ahead of Christmas.
The negotiators are trying to find a way for both Iran and the United States to return to full compliance with the former and the latter under the agreement, formally known as the Joint Integrated Action Plan (JAP).
Diplomats from Germany, France, the United Kingdom, Russia and China, as well as Iran, are taking part in the talks. The US is closely involved.
Western governments warn that there are only a few weeks left for a positive outcome to the talks, as otherwise Tehran’s progress on its agenda will make the CSD meaningless. Washington has threatened to consider additional sanctions if the Vienna talks prove fruitless.
In the previous cycle, which ended in mid-December, no substantial progress was made. Among the issues that remain unresolved are the order and the process of verifying what will be agreed.
The then President Donald Trump unilaterally withdrew the US from the agreement in 2018, re-imposed the sanctions that had been lifted and new ones, forcing Iran to start violating part of the commitments made in 2015 from 2019 onwards.
