A pilot from the now defunct TAM Linhas Aéreas (now Latam) reported in 2007 to the 4th Integrated Air Defense and Air Traffic Control Center (Cindacta IV) that, during a flight on October 1 of that year, had to make an “evasive maneuver” after the aircraft approached an unidentified flying object (UFO) that he believed to be a “space station” .
The report is recorded by the Brazilian Aerospace Defense Command (Comdabra), an agency linked to the Air Force, and is available from the National Archives.
According to the report made by the pilot, whose name was not disclosed, the aircraft was on flight 8077, between Manaus (AM) and Belém (PA). At around 6:43 am, when the plane was flying over the city of Santarém (PA) at an altitude of 39 thousand feet (about 11.9 thousand meters), the crew spotted a luminous object moving from east to west .
The flight commander reported that he made an “evasive maneuver to the right” after spotting the object emitting a bright light. According to the pilot, the presence of the UFO was accused in the TCAS .

“The pilot also reported that the aforementioned light accompanied the flight until close to SBBE [aeroporto de Belém] and thought it was a space station,” the document says.
TCAS is a device that, when translated into Portuguese, is called On-Board Collision Prevention System. The Department of Airspace Control (Decea) explains that TCAS is a “shows the pilot of an aircraft the relative position of another aircraft flying nearby, whenever this has its transponder in operation”.
The same object sighted on October 1, 2007 by the TAM pilot was also seen, at around 7:12 am, by the crew of the now defunct Varig Log that was on a flight between Miami, in the United States, and Manaus. .
Another case involving TAM flight
On February 10, 2012, the crew of TAM flight 3715, which was flying from Belém to Brasília, reported having seen, at around 7:50 pm, “unknown traffic” on the aircraft’s TCAS.
“The pilot had to perform an evasive maneuver to the left,” says the report, which was also made to Cindacta IV.
“When reporting the incident to ACC-AZ [Centro de Controle de Área Amazônico]the operator at the time noted that there were multiple targets on the radar console screen,” the document adds.

Both cases – from 2007 and 2012 – are not included in the list of air incidents recorded by the Center for Investigation and Prevention of Aeronautical Accidents (Cenipa).
Latam was approached by CNN to comment on the cases, but did not want to speak out.
Gol plane made “evasive maneuver” in 2014
On January 24, 2014, the pilot of Gol flight 9109, which was flying the Brasília-Fortaleza route, stated that he had to make an “evasive maneuver” to avoid a UFO in Ceará .
The document reports that a large, white object was seen at “supersonic” speed near the municipality of Quixadá (CE), approximately 170 kilometers from Fortaleza. According to reports, the object flew in a “zigzag” from east to west and left no trace.
The same report mentions that two other pilots said they saw the same UFO on the same date. One of them was in command of flight 6372, of the now defunct Avianca Brasil, from Guarulhos to Fortaleza.
According to the document, the Avianca pilot saw the object at around 12:15 pm, at the same altitude range where the Gol crew had sighted it.
Gol was also approached by CNN but did not respond to contacts.
Reports made by Brazilian pilots
Last year alone, the Cindactas received at least 30 reports of UFO sightings made by Brazilian pilots . Most cases occurred in the South region.
A pilot flying over the city of Belém (PA) at around 6:40 am on August 23 said he saw two strange star-shaped objects. When recording the scene, he said he tried to film the situation, but the object did not appear in the videos or photos.
In April, another airline pilot flying the Brasília-Marabá (PA) route said that, around midnight, he saw a “whiteish-yellow light, like an airplane landing light, rotating counterclockwise.” The object “was above his flight level” – at 34,000 feet.
On February 7, the pilot of an aircraft said he saw, at around 3 am, a red and green light in a circular shape the size of a “small to large ball (varying)”. He said the object was flying “ten times faster than a commercial airplane”. The sighting occurred off the coast of Santa Catarina.

UFO Night
In May 1986, an episode occurred in Brazil that became known as UFO Night. . According to the Ministry of Justice, on May 19 of that year, 21 objects were identified by Cindacta radars.
The Brazilian Air Force (FAB) sent five jets to chase these UFOs, but none of them were successful in the mission.
The National Archives also made available audio recordings between pilots and air traffic controllers during this episode. In one of these conversations, a man who saw UFOs said he was “giddy.” Click here to listen.
