Tanzanian President urged CBR to investigate digital assets

The President of Tanzania noted the growing influence of digital assets on the financial system of the world and urged the country’s Central Bank to research cryptocurrencies.

Samia Suluhu Hassan said that Tanzania has relatively low penetration of crypto assets, but in order to keep up with the times, the country’s regulator needs to know more about cryptocurrencies.

“We see new opportunities emerging on the Internet. However, in the region, including Tanzania, we did not accept and did not begin to use these opportunities. I urge the Central Bank to start working on this issue. The Central Bank of Tanzania must be ready for changes in order not to be trapped, ”said Samia Hassan Suluhu.

African regulators are not very active in researching cryptocurrencies. At the same time, Africa is one of the most active regions for peer-to-peer cryptocurrency trading. True, Tanzania is only the seventh country in Africa in terms of peer-to-peer trade. On average, the country carries out P2P transactions with bitcoin for only $ 90,000 per week.

Currently, state digital currencies in Africa are being developed by the central banks of Nigeria and Ghana.
