Antonio Taquis, CEO of Panama Shipping and former Ambassador of Panama to Greece, spoke about Greek and Panama shipping at the 7th Delphi Economic Forum.
During the discussion with the journalist, Mr. Christos Konstas, Mr. Taquis underlined that the relationship between Greece and Panama goes through shipping. He pointed out that the two countries enjoy very good bilateral relations, with Panama having in fact maintained an Embassy in Athens for over 40 years, while he underlined that the Greek community in Panama has been influencing the country for more than a century. “Greece and Panama share not only common interests, but also a common destiny,” he said, adding that this “is determined by the two countries’ relationship with the sea and their role in world shipping,” noting that many Greek-owned ships are under the Panamanian flag.
Describing the challenges posed by the many parallel crises, in particular the Russian invasion, and the changing global security architecture, Taquis said the countries need to strengthen their bilateral relations. “That is why Greece and Panama need to build a more solid and multidimensional cooperation,” he said. Finally, highlighting the advantages of Greece’s presence in the region, he said that “Panama can become Greece’s diplomatic gateway to Latin America.”
