Earlier this week, the federal government presented a proposal to reduce fuel taxes in an attempt to contain the rise in prices in the sector. The measures provide for compensation for losses in tax collection by states that agree to zero ICMS on fuels, as long as the Senate approves the bill that sets a ceiling of 17% for the tax.
The proposal has an estimated cost to the federal coffers of R$ 40 billion by the end of this year, according to projections by the government’s economic team. The initiative faces resistance from governors, who fear the impact of the loss of revenue, and from market sectors, who project a risk to the balance of public accounts.
