Taylor Lautner said he had to fight to continue his role in the “Twilight” film franchise.
The actor participated in an episode of the podcast Call Her Daddy accompanied by his wife, and talked about how he was almost replaced for the role of Jacob Black after the first film.
“They called me and said, ‘Thanks for your participation, but we’re recasting your character for the rest of the franchise,’” he said.
The reason for the change was the description of his character in Stephenie Meyer’s book series, on which the films are based.
“My character, in the first book, was supposed to be like a skinny 16-year-old boy, and in the middle of “New Moon”, he would transform into a muscular 25-year-old man,” he says.
“The plan was to cast a 16-year-old kid – and I was 16 at the time – and then recast a 20-something guy to go on and be Jacob for the rest of the franchise. I had to fight for my role back,” he explained.
Lautner used the books as a reference and began going to the gym after filming the first film, “Twilight”, in 2008.
“I was ready, so when we got that call, my team said, ‘Have you seen him recently?'” he said. He explained that he trained intensely for nine months and gained about 20 to 25 pounds.
But even though he had undergone a huge physical change, he still had to re-audition for the role.
