Taylor Swift and The Weeknd are officially new members of the Oscar Academy

This Thursday (27), the Oscar Academy announced Taylor Swift and The Weeknd as new voting members for the 2024 Oscars in the music area. Both had already been invited in June this year, along with 398 other names, including artists, executives and other celebrities.

“Where words fail, music speaks. Filling the emotional spaces with music that stays with us long after the credits have rolled, here are the newest members of the Academy’s Musical Branch,” announced the Academy’s social media profile.

In addition to Taylor Swift and The Weeknd, the other new members in the music field are: Jean Michel Bernard, Rafiq Bhatia, Ian Chang, Ryan Lott, Alain Boublil, David Buckley, Dominick George Certo, Chandrabose, Anne-Kathrin Elisabeth Dern, Anna Drubich , MM Keeravaani, Penka Kouneva, Zeltia Montes, Starr Parodi and Dara Taylor.

The Oscars are attentive to criticism due to lack of representation both in the categories and in the professionals responsible for voting and nominating productions and, according to Variety magazine, sought to include 40% women, 34% representatives of underrepresented ethnic and racial communities and 52% from 51 countries and territories outside the United States among those invited to vote.

“The Academy is proud to welcome these artists and professionals as members,” Academy CEO Bill Kramer and President Janet Yang told the outlet at the time the guests were announced. “They represent extraordinary global talent across all cinematic disciplines and have had a vital impact on the arts and sciences of cinema and film fans around the world.”

Last year, singer Billie Eilish, Oscar winner in the Best Supporting Actress category Ariana DeBose (“Amor Sublime Amor”), actresses Caitríona Balfe and Jamie Dornan (“Belfast”) and Disney executive Dana Walde were part of the voter list.

Academy members are responsible for choosing Oscar-nominated and winning films. The only way to join is by invitation, which is made by the Academy council after being previously approved by the respective section in which you will vote.

The next edition of the Oscars takes place on March 10, 2024.
