Taylor Swift Celebrates Record Store Day With Limited Edition Vinyls

Taylor Swift is this year’s global ambassador for Record Store Day, which took place this Saturday (23rd) – and she’s marking the occasion with a special limited release on vinyl.

Record Store Day encourages music fans to support independent record stores, organizers explain. The tradition was started in 2008 by independent record store owners and employees to honor their “unique culture” and is celebrated around the world.

On Instagram, Taylor said she is “honored to be this year’s global ambassador and happy that we can celebrate these sacred and important places now more than ever.”

The star released a 7-inch double-sided clear vinyl record containing two versions of her song “The Lakes” from her 2020 album “Folklore.” Only 10,000 copies of the vinyl are available.

More than 300 releases were on sale on Saturday. Other artists who have released special edition vinyl records to mark the occasion include Madonna, Blondie, Mariah Carey, Childish Gambino, Foo Fighters and Kacey Musgraves.

Some are printed on color vinyl, including a 50th anniversary release of The Rolling Stones’ “More Hot Rocks (Big Hits & Fazed Cookies)” on glow-in-the-dark vinyl and Nicki Minaj’s “Beam Me Up Scotty”, on a marbled fuchsia vinyl.

Some releases also include rare compositions. “The Brilliant Adventure EP” features four previously unreleased songs by David Bowie.

Limited edition discs are available at participating stores listed on the Record Store Day website.

Last year, Record Store Day served as an important beacon of hope for small businesses hit by the Covid-19 pandemic. While in recent years many record stores have held presentations and live events to celebrate Record Store Day, since 2020 many of them have had to scale back celebrations or focus on online events.

“We are so happy to be back in record stores today!” wrote Record Store Day on Twitter. “Thank you for celebrating indie record store culture.”
