Taylor Swift in Brazil and the return of the nostalgic friendship bracelet between fans

This one is for the swifties out there! Since last Friday (2), when Taylor Swift finally announced her visit to Brazil in November this year, the Brazilian fandom has some goals ahead.

Far beyond getting the disputed ticket, facing kilometric queues or enjoying the “The Eras Tour” show, one of the goals is to make your friendship bracelet and exchange with other fans.

Very colorful, full of beads with initial words, stars and cute hearts, the famous friendship bracelets are a trademark among the singer’s fans. In addition to celebrating the moment, the idea is to keep a beautiful memory of a moment that, for them, is very special.

“It consists of making Taylor-themed bracelets, taking them to the show and exchanging them with other people who also made bracelets”, says an Internet user on Twitter, explaining the concept in a post that reached more than 1.5 million views.

Where did the idea of swapping bracelets come from?

The kickoff took place in 2019, with the release of the song “You need to calm down”. In the single, Taylor brings a fun letter, with references to sexist and homophobic messages that she usually reads on social networks.

The song, which is part of the “Lover” album, is almost like a response to the haters. “Stressing yourself and obsessing over someone else is not fun,” she says in one of the song’s snippets.

Taking advantage of the visuals with the colorful aesthetic, Taylor also made political points.

“You are someone we don’t know, but you are chasing my friends with a missile. Why are you mad when you could be happy?”, she sings using the acronym GLAAD in honor of an American organization that fights on behalf of the LGBTQIA+ community.

“It was basically from this that the fans had the idea of making, on their own, friendship bracelets to exchange with other fans, especially at concerts. Everyone can use creativity and put the names of songs, albums and other references that remind us of her and her messages”, she explains to CNN student Raylene Elane, 19 years old.

Already in October 2022, with the release of the song “You’re your own kid”, when the artist used the song to talk about the most diverse feelings, including the idea that you can be your best company, the making of wristbands has been reinforced.

“This brand got even stronger last year. In this specific lyric, she encourages us to share the good times and keep the happy memories. That’s what Taylor says, bad times pass, but happy memories last a lifetime and, with these bracelets, that will be eternalized”, adds 18-year-old student Vitória Bocchini.

Nostalgia comeback is a toast to Gen Z

In addition to beaded bracelets, which marked the generation of the 2000s, other visual trends also popped up among Generation Z, especially among the fashionistas on duty, such as the low waist, beret, sparkles and sunglasses, characteristic of Y2K fashion. (year 2000 or, in Portuguese, years 2000).

When it comes to behavior, what was popular in previous decades is also usually successful among young people. And that’s how digital cameras became part of the “hits of the moment” ranking.

To get an idea, the hashtag #digitalcamera on TikTok already has more than 560 million views. Famous like Hailey Bieber and Charlie D’Amelio are users of the item. Already on Brazilian soil, Rafa Kalimann and Bruna Marquezine also make a point of sharing their shots with a retro air.

The reasons for such worship may still vary. For some, it is precisely the feeling of nostalgia and simplicity, while others bet on the cult and asthetic in their profiles full of vintage atmosphere.
