A student reported a professor at Univille University, in Joinville (SC), for racial slurs after calling the black student a “thief” while he was taking photos in a common space at the university. The case happened on September 18th.
The Maria Laura Black Movement (MNML) published a note of repudiation about the case of racism towards the fashion student and detailed that, on that occasion, the student went to a tank located close to the back window of a classroom where the teacher taught her class, the group said.
“At that moment, in a loud and inappropriate tone of voice, the teacher uttered the phrase: ‘what a scare, a thief outside’, causing the entire class to turn their gaze to the young black man,” said the MNML.
According to the report of the movement, the student questioned the teacher through the window about what she had said. “The teacher reaffirmed her words and repeated in a mocking and repetitive tone: ‘Thief! Burglar! Thief!’” said the group.
The student then went to the teacher’s classroom to confront her personally about what had happened and demanded explanations, stating that he would not accept the way he had been treated, according to the Maria Laura Black Movement.
“The teacher […] He offered a superficial apology, which was promptly rejected by the student, who made it clear that he would take the necessary measures, including informing the Univille coordination about the case”, said the MNML.
The student filed a police report. “The Civil Police have 30 days to complete the investigation, the case was registered as racial insult, with no indictment yet,” said delegate Rodrigo Gusso, responsible for the case, to CNN .
“This is not an isolated episode. The MNML will remain vigilant and will take all appropriate measures to ensure that this case is not hushed up and that the teacher is held responsible for her actions.”
In a statement, Univille University reported that the rector received and spoke to the student who reported having suffered an act of racial insult last week. The University also stated that the professor involved was dismissed this Monday morning (23).
Alexandre Cidral made the institutional apology to the young man and stated that Univille does not condone any act that offends human dignity and announced measures.
“From the beginning, our student has been assisted by a psychologist and social worker from our Student Relations Center, and by the Dean of Education, Prof. Dr. Eduardo da Silva, responsible for Graduation”, said Univille.
Chief Gusso said the police still do not have images or other evidence. The victim and the teacher will be heard next week.
THE CNN did not find the teacher’s defense. The space remains open.
