Teacher who helped rescue students during attack on daycare center in SC suffers heart attack

A teacher who witnessed the attack on the Cantinho Bom Pastor day care center, in Blumenau, last Wednesday (5) and helped to rescue the students, suffered a heart attack this Thursday (6).

According to a note from the day care center, teacher Alaide was treated with “a compatible picture of acute coronary syndrome”. She performed tests and found acute myocardial infarction.

The teacher underwent a catheterization and an electrocardiogram, which ruled out the existence of arterial disease and did not show sequelae.

In a statement, the Cantinho do Bom Pastor day care center said that the cause of the heart attack was “probably due to the adrenergic discharge due to the emotional trauma of having witnessed the tragedy”. The daycare also said that the teacher is fine, medicated and has already been discharged.

On Wednesday, a 25-year-old man broke into the nursery, killing four children and injuring five others. According to the Fire Department, the fatal victims were three boys and a girl, aged 5 to 7 years old.

“The night after the attack, Professor Alaide sought medical attention with a compatible picture of acute coronary syndrome. She was transferred to the municipality’s high-complexity cardiology reference, where it was confirmed by tests that she had suffered an acute myocardial infarction. She underwent catheterization to rule out coronary artery disease, which showed no significant lesions requiring additional procedures. An echocardiogram was also performed, which showed no sequelae. The case was defined as MINOCA (myocardial infarction without coronary obstruction) probably due to adrenergic discharge due to the emotional trauma of having witnessed the tragedy. She was discharged today, well, with a prescription for medication and a referral to maintain outpatient treatment. We ask for prayers for her recovery!”
