Technocracy and Apocalypse: the alarm cry of Asif Kapadia

Precautions before vision: breathe deeply, always think that it is a film and that there is time to change direction. The world is not (again) as the one you see in 2073 – Last callalthough unfortunately we may not be so far away. The latest work of Asif Kapadia, director, among others, of the award -winning documentaries Seine (2010) e Amy (2015), recalls everyone to their responsibilities, asks to take a position, to protest, to act, before it is too late.

Asif Kapadia

This time Asif Kapadia mixes elements of terrifying science fiction, in which you can see a dystopian and despotic Neo San Francisco suffocated by pollution and garbage, with real archival movies taken by the news, which show what could lead us to a world controlled by dictators and Tecnogeek, without any personal freedom, crushed by the climatic disaster: “The film began after United, lies and corruption led us to Brexit. I felt the duty to do something to understand why the planet seemed to move in the direction of self -portrait and violence. Was it I who was going crazy or was something really happening? ».

Otherwise if something is happening: «Technological companies are doing everything to govern the world, to have more and more information, to earn more every day. Governments, which should protect us and who should promulgate laws to stop these techno-miliardari, are instead playing their game ».

So how to fight the system all together? «I believe that in the meantime you can start with yourself, wondering what we are doing firsthand. What applications are we using? Who do we make the expense and other goods at home deliver? Who we are giving to
Our money and our data? I wish that after each screening of the film there was a debate, that the public was invited to speak: confrontation is too important. By now we are all connected, we have seen it with Covid: if it happens on the other side of the world it does not mean that it is not your problem. If there is, it is already coming here. We have to worry about what’s going on, it is time to make us feel, since governments do not give us answers and perhaps it would be time to rethink even how to change the way we elect our executive powers. By now I believe that this system has broken ».

The film, which was the number one in the United States on the HBO Max platform, now arrives in Italy: previewed at the Cinemambiente Festival, organized by the National Museum of Cinema and directed by Lia Venen (in Turin from 5 to 10 June), then arrives in our rooms, from 16 to 18 June.
