The administration of US President Joe Biden has banned the issuance of licenses to US companies for the export of most goods for Huawei. This was reported by several major publications at once, including Reuters, Financial Times and Bloomberg.
For several years, the Chinese technology giant has been under US sanctions, which imposes significant restrictions on its activities. However, Huawei still received certain products with the permission of the US Department of Commerce – the department issued a license to some US companies to export goods and technologies. For example, the same Qualcomm sold chips for 4G smartphones to a Chinese manufacturer in 2020. Now sources say that licenses are no longer issued. According to one source, U.S. officials have tightened restrictions on Huawei’s exports of goods and technologies, which will include not only 5G, but also 4G, Wi-Fi 6 (7), artificial intelligence, and high-performance computing and cloud technologies.
Another source claims that earlier permits were issued if they did not concern 5G technologies. Now such licenses are not issued, and previously approved ones are withdrawn. All new applications will be rejected. This may mean that the US is seeking to impose a complete ban on the export of software and hardware for Huawei.
The US blacklisted Huawei in 2019, barring most US companies from supplying goods and technology unless they were granted licenses. Despite the desire of officials to deprive the Chinese company of the ability to buy and develop chips that are used in most of its products, Huawei continued its activities. From April to November 2021, vendors received $61 billion worth of licenses to sell various goods to her. In December last year, the Chinese company said its revenue had begun to rise, with total year-end revenue of about $91.53 billion, just slightly less than in 2021.
