Technology helps prevent and respond to emergencies

Natural disasters have increased significantly in recent years.

In 2024, for example, Brazil experienced one of the greatest climate tragedies with the floods in Rio Grande do Sul, which flooded a large part of the cities, causing destruction and homelessness.

Intense rains have caused significant damage, but so have droughts and forest fires. According to WWF (World Wildlife Fund), between January 1st and November 30th, 2024, 134,979 fires were recorded in the Amazon – an increase of 43.7% compared to the same period of the previous year.

If, on the one hand, emergencies are growing, whether environmental, chemical or biological, on the other hand, technology has been contributing robustly to reducing the impacts generated.

The fight against forest fires that occurred in the Pantanal regions, in Mato Grosso and Mato Grosso do Sul, is an example. State-of-the-art robots operated by remote control; helicopters that drop water and retardants using the Bambi Bucket mechanism attached to the aircraft; quadricycles with equipment that atomizes water and even high-flow cannons were some of the resources and equipment used by Response – Ambipar’s vertical specialist in prevention, management and response to environmental, chemical and biological emergencies that affect health, the environment and property.

“We are facing a significant increase in natural disasters, such as floods in the South and forest fires. To mitigate these impacts, Ambipar uses cutting-edge technologies, reaffirming its commitment to leading highly complex operations with efficiency and innovation”, highlighted the CEO of Ambibar Response, Rafael Espirito Santo.

Emergency response

The company provides risk management and prevention projects to all modes and sectors (road, rail, industrial, maritime, river, pipeline and forestry) and manages emergencies globally in a simultaneous, scalable and standardized way, through trained and qualified to operate. Ambipar has expertise in Hazmat (response to emergencies with dangerous products); Fire (fighting industrial and forest fires); Oil Spill (fighting onshore and offshore oil spills); Medical (response to medical emergencies – APH); in addition to offering international Hazmat training.

There are more than 600 operational bases strategically distributed in South America, North America, Europe, Africa, the Middle East and Antarctica to provide the best crisis management service. The Company also has a Command Center – Emergency Control and Management Center (CECOE), certified under the UNE-ISO 22320 Standard, made up of experts in crisis management, who support decision makers with detailed information on emergency scenarios and ensure operation 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

With more than 200,000 emergencies attended to, Ambipar works with specialized professionals, state-of-the-art technological equipment and the use of techniques based on globally recognized protocols.

Expertise and technology

Ensuring energy autonomy and availability of fluid transfer systems for the most varied types of chemical products, such as flammable gases and liquids, toxic gases, corrosive liquids, viscous liquids, among others, Ambipar has extensive experience in responding to emergencies.

Due to its expertise, it was called upon by the Spanish government to help with the recovery of Valencia, a Spanish city hit hard by intense rain, which resulted in devastating floods, in 2024.

In Spanish territory, the company mobilized a robust structure for the operation, including specialized teams to restore the most affected areas.

In the same period, Ambipar Response worked to clean up the damage caused by Hurricane Milton, serving places such as industries, resorts, hospitals and public services. Among the highlights of this operation is Tampa airport, Florida. The company also operated in areas hit by floods in North Carolina, an operation for which it deployed teams previously located in Texas, North Dakota and Colorado to support the affected regions. Around 30 customers were served by a team of approximately 50 professionals, reinforcing Ambipar’s commitment to responding quickly to high-impact emergencies.

Furthermore, in the first half of 2024, Ambipar joined the humanitarian support chain for flood victims in Rio Grande do Sul, mobilizing 68 emergency specialists to collaborate with authorities in the affected regions. The company provided a range of resources to assist in rescue and rescue efforts, including 2 helicopters, 30 vessels, 6 vehicles, 21 excavators and 12 trucks. At the same time, Ambipar stands out as the only Brazilian company to participate in the mega operation to remove the cargo ship M/V Dali, on the Patapsco River, in Baltimore (USA). With more than 30 professionals allocated full time, the company collaborates with the Unified Response Command to stabilize the vessel, restore navigation, remove the ship from the site and clean up the wreckage in the bay where the accident occurred.

Among the equipment used, pumps with a capacity to remove up to 20 thousand cubic liters of water per minute, essential for unblocking flooded basements; heavy trucks; cranes; a firefighting truck with a submerged hydraulic pump, as well as 24 divers and inspection drones, who acted quickly to control the tragedy.

With these and other actions, Ambipar has significantly contributed to preventing or mitigating the impacts caused by environmental, chemical or biological emergencies.
