Commenting on the promising results of Moderna’s COVID-19 vaccine, World Health Organization (WHO) Director General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus told a news conference on Tuesday that there were “many questions” and that it was not the time for complacency, as reported by Reuters.
“While we continue to receive encouraging news about vaccines for COVID-19 and we remain cautiously optimistic that new tools may start arriving in the coming months, right now we are extremely concerned about the increase in cases we are seeing in some countries, particularly in Europe and America ”, said Tedros.
Soumya Swaminathan, chief scientist at the WHO, has said Moderna’s results were “quite encouraging.”
“But there are many left, many unresolved questions about the duration of protection, the impact on serious diseases, the impact on different subpopulations, especially the elderly, as well as adverse events beyond a certain period of time ”, he added.
These comments come after Moderna reported Monday that its experimental vaccine showed an efficacy of 94.5%. Last week, Pfizer’s vaccine was shown to be more than 90% effective in preventing infection.
