Teen Accounts: Instagram will change settings for under-16s

Meta announced changes for accounts of users under 16 on Instagram . To the Teen Accounts on the social network will have greater protection, limiting the content seen by users and who can contact them.

Young people under 16 years old will be included in this category automatically, and will need permission from a parent or guardian to relax the imposed settings.

Additionally, Teen Accounts will also have access to an exclusive feature that will allow them to select which topics will appear in the Explore tab and in their recommendations.

Check out the differences between Teen Instagram Accounts

  • Private accounts: Teens must accept requests for new followers, and people who don’t follow them can’t see their content or interact with them;
  • Message restrictions: teenagers will only be able to receive messages from people they already follow or are already connected to;
  • Sensitive Content Restrictions: teenagers will automatically be included in Instagram’s most restrictive sensitive content control settings, which limit the appearance of sensitive content (such as those showing people fighting or promoting cosmetic procedures) in the Explore and Reels tabs, for example;
  • Limited interactions: Teens can only be tagged or mentioned by people they follow. Additionally, offensive words and phrases will be filtered from comments and DM requests;
  • Time limit reminders: Teens will receive notifications asking them to log out of the app after 60 minutes of use each day;
  • Night mode: will be activated between 10pm and 7am, silencing notifications overnight and sending automatic replies in DMs.

To change any of these settings, teens under 16 will need permission from their parents. To get this permission, you need to set up parental supervision in the app, which will allow your child to approve or deny their requests for changes, or allow them to manage their own settings.

If parents or guardians want to have more control over their children’s experience on Instagram, they can enable supervision resources which allow:

  • See information about who your teens are chatting with (although it doesn’t give you access to the content of their messages);
  • Set daily time limits in the app;
  • Prevent use during specific periods;
  • See what topics your kids are following.

According to Meta, the changes should come into effect in Brazil and Latin America from January 2025.

The company also said it plans to bring similar features to its other social networks — including Facebook, WhatsApp and Treads.
