The Revolutionary Guards in Iran successfully launched a third military satellite today that was subsequently put into orbit, state media reported, citing Communications Minister Isa Zarepour. The Noor 3 satellite orbits 450 kilometers above the Earth’s surface and was launched by a Cassette rocketstate media reported, with which it had launched in 2022 and its predecessor, Noor 2.
The US military says the same long-range ballistic technology used to launch satellites could also allow Tehran to launch longer-range weapons, potentially including nuclear warheads.
Tehran denies US claims that the activity is a cover for ballistic missile development and says it has never sought to develop nuclear weapons.
Iran, which has one of the largest missile programs in the Middle East, has failed several satellite launches in recent years due to technical issues.
The Biden administration announced new sanctions on Iran on September 19, targeting several individuals and entities in Russia, China and Turkey in connection with Tehran’s deployment of drones and military aircraft.
It had previously sanctioned Iran’s civilian space agency and two research organizations in 2019, saying they were being used to advance Tehran’s ballistic missile program.
