Telefonica partners with Qualcomm to develop the Metaverse

One of the largest telecom operators in Spain and Europe, Telefonica, has announced a partnership with chipmaker Qualcomm to jointly develop projects related to the metaverse.

According to the terms of cooperation, Telefonica’s telecommunications infrastructure will serve as a platform for deploying ready-made projects created using Qualcomm technologies.

The technology created by Qualcomm is called Snapdragon Spaces and is a complete set of software for developers who create metaverse solutions, especially augmented reality headsets.

Snapdragon Spaces is also a device-independent technology, so metaverses developed with it can be run on any headset on the market, including the Meta Quest line of devices.

Telefonica will incorporate this technology into initiatives it develops through its Meta Workers’ Hub. Telefonica Vice President Daniel Hernandez said:

“Augmented Reality will add a new dimension to the digital and real world, allowing people to connect, do business and have fun in completely new ways. And we are preparing for this future, building infrastructure, upgrading equipment, developing our services and establishing partnerships that will allow us to offer customers new innovative devices and services.”

Telefonica previously partnered with Meta to build the Meta Workers’ Hub in Madrid, a lab that aims to encourage firms to build products based on the Metaverse.
