Telegram has released an update with reactions to messages, spoilers and a built-in translator

The Telegram messenger presented its last major update in 2021 – the twelfth in a row. In version 8.4, users have access to reactions to messages, a built-in translator, spoilers in the form of hidden text and some other innovations. For links to profiles, groups, channels and bots, you can now also generate QR codes with your own unique design.

Reactions to messages

Fast reactions represent an emotional response to posting as an interactive emoji. In private chats, they are always on. In groups and channels, administrators can enable or disable reactions and choose which emoji users can choose. To send a quick reaction in the form of a thumb up, just double-tap the message, for other reactions, you need to tap on the message (on iOS: hold your finger) and select one of the 11 available emojis.

Control the display of reactions can be found in the application settings. Android: “Chat Settings” → “Fast Response”. iOS: Stickers & Emoji → Fast Response.

Hidden text

The innovation is intended to save movie lovers from premature disclosure of spoilers for new rental releases. Telegram has added the ability to highlight part of the typed message and make it invisible. Text with this formatting is not shown in notifications, chat list, or messages themselves. To view the content, you just need to touch the message.

Translation of messages

The Android version of the messenger has a built-in “Google Translator”, iOS uses Apple’s proprietary system translator. The function is intended for over 500 million Telegram users from all over the world who communicate, receive news and read public channels in different languages. The settings provide a choice of languages that do not require translation – for messages in these languages, the “Translate” button will not be displayed.

Text translation is enabled in the “Settings” – “Language” section. The function works both for highlighting individual words and for messages as a whole. Requires iOS version 15 or higher and Android any version.

QR codes with design settings

Directly from Telegram, you can now show a branded QR code instead of a link to quickly go to a group, channel or bot. The function works for any personal account with an attached public link. For example, users can exchange QR codes to tell about a group of like-minded people or a channel with interesting content.

An icon for creating a QR code appeared next to the public link in the user profile or chat. The messenger even allows you to customize the design to your liking: choose a specific color and background pattern.
