Telegram links stopped working in Viber. A cowardly fight with a competitor?

In recent years, Telegram has been rapidly gaining popularity, pushing other messengers. If all over the world it competes with WhatsApp, then in many CIS markets one of its main competitors is Viber. It seems that the latter decided to take desperate measures and began to block Telegram links like t.me. This was reported by the profile portal Telegram Info.

According to Telegram Info, only one link format is currently blocked in Viber – they are no longer highlighted and clickable. Other formats (.t.me, tx.me and telegram.me) work.

This doesn’t look like a bug. Previously, some competitors did the same: the photo social network bought by Mark Zuckerberg’s company blocked the placement of t.me links in the profile description, and Twitter marked articles posted on telegra.ph as spam.

Updated: the author of the news double-checked this and did not encounter a blocking by the Telegram link – either it really was a bug, or the Viber developers changed their decision, or the blocking does not apply to all countries.
