Telegram to Launch App Store and Web3 Browser

Telegram founder Pavel Durov said that “hundreds of millions of people” will become familiar with blockchain technology through the messaging app this year.

On July 19, Durov announced that by the end of the month, the messenger would have an app store (Mini Apps) and a built-in browser with Web3 support.

How Telegram Plans to Introduce Millions of Users to Blockchain

The initiative comes amid growing interest in mini-apps — JavaScript-based services in the Telegram app. They are easy to set up and can be used for a variety of purposes.

Recently the messenger team reportedthat more than 500 million users interact with mini-apps every month, purchasing goods, accessing services and games. The platform’s integration with the TON blockchain has led to a surge in the popularity of cryptocurrency-based games, especially after the success of Notcoin.

Earlier this month, Durov praised Hamster Kombat, another tap-to-earn game, for its rapid growth. The app has attracted $239 million in three months. The Telegram founder plans to “keep this fire going” by making the messenger “the epicenter [блокчейн] transformation of society.”

“2024 will go down in history as the year hundreds of millions of people were introduced to blockchain. We are proud that Telegram is at the epicenter of this societal transformation,” stated Durov.

Market experts believe that Durov’s plan will significantly increase the popularity of Web3, making this technology available to millions of people using the messenger. However, some crypto enthusiasts have a different opinion. A well-known community member under the nickname Woody Lightyear expressed skepticism about Durov’s statements. He noted that interest in tap-to-earn may turn out to be another hype that will soon fade away.

“This culture of mini-app games is a great thing with a lot of potential, but I haven’t yet seen a team or project that acknowledges its current limitations and strategically builds around those limitations,” he added.

In addition, Telegram’s growing popularity may attract attackers. Recently, the Slow Mist platform reported an increase in the number of phishing attacks aimed at users of the TON blockchain.

Durov acknowledged this, stating that public user accounts will now display the month and country of registration. In addition, Mini Apps will be able to issue labels for channels, thereby creating a decentralized market for third-party verification.

“Telegram will soon display the month of registration and the primary country for public accounts, similar to Instagram. We will also allow organizations to use their mini-apps to issue channel tags, creating a decentralized market for third-party verification,” he added.
