Telephone scammers in Russia began to introduce themselves more often as employees of the Ministry of Internal Affairs and the police

In Russia, the number of calls from fraudsters has quadrupled when they represent employees of government agencies, law enforcement agencies, and financial organizations. This information was provided by the developers of the service for automatically determining the number of Kaspersky Who Calls, which was collected based on anonymous user reviews of the application of the same name.

Experts note that a large number of such calls compared to the previous period (December 2020 – February 2021) is associated with a change in tactics. Previously, fraudsters often presented themselves as bank employees and offered to transfer money to a “safe” account in connection with suspicious activity, but now they call under the guise of law enforcement officers in order to catch the victim by surprise and quickly convince her to fulfill her plan. Analysts say that in this case, people act hastily and on emotions, without trying to understand the situation.

During a telephone conversation, attackers are usually persuasive and assertive, they use appropriate intonation and legal terms, intimidate liability in case of refusal to cooperate, and resort to other methods. In such cases, it is better to call back the official number of the organization to which the caller allegedly belongs and to clarify all questions.
