“Tell your memorable experience with a penis.” The art project that wants to break a taboo

There is a lot of talk about the penis. But we don’t talk about it the same way we do about other parts of the body, like the eyes or the mouth. The outward appearance of a penis and what it is capable of doing can be a source of great pride for those who own one. When referenced to it in rap songs or trivial language, his bond with male power, privilege and pleasure are undeniable. In fact, the phallus and phallic symbols are associated with masculinity and virility.

The Mumbai-based artist and illustrator Indu Harikumar, 42, wants to change this status quo. Most of his artistic projects focus on self-esteem and self-acceptance, as well as on breaking taboos and clichés widespread in society. His wish is that we talk about the penis the same way we talk about our love handles or partner’s back. In other words, she would like them to be there sincere and authentic conversations.

For this, his latest crowdsourced art project, brazenly titled Cock-a-doodle and which the magazine also talked about Viceinvite people to share their penis storiesexperiences centered on the male member as a source of pleasure, pain, insecurity, fear, disappointment or pride.

But there is a rule: you can’t talk about the penis if you have one. You can share stories and experiences, but only about someone else. So, you can talk about your partner’s penis, your partner’s relationship with his or her penis, experiences you have had or stories that have been told to you by someone with a penis. An interesting rule, which creates space for different perspectives, but also for memories that are not always flattering.

Based on these stories, the artist then creates digital artwork and then shares them on his Instagram account @Induviduality. Participants can email their stories and remain anonymous if they wish.

As with his previous art projects – including 100 Indian tales from Tinder And Identity -, Indu confessed that the idea of this new penis project is also derived from one of his own curiosity and insecurityfrom the desire to know if other people had had the same experiences as you or if they had the same feelings as you about the penis.

“There is this urgency to talk about it freely, without feeling you judge us as little good – he said – I also wanted to investigate how important is power in sex and how this affects relationships. ” The penis seemed to contain many responses, being the seat, the symbol of patriarchal power.

The project started in May and Indu has already received many testimonies. In one story, one participant overturns the idea of the penis as a tool for male pleasure. For her, do one fellatio it’s a way to take power “in hand” as he entrusts her with the task of pleasing her partner.

In another story, a person talks about how a large penis can become the catalyst of much of a man’s self-esteemand how this “oversized” self-esteem can make him an enthusiastic lover, but led to not committing to a single partner.

Another story concerns the micropenis, which is the medical term for small penises due to hormonal problems or birth defects. But instead of being a source of disappointment, the participant revealed that he was relieved to learn that his match was on Grindr he also had a small member. There are also stories of penis piercings, vaginismus, and abuse.

«It is encouraging to see people open up to their insecurities, just talking about a penis – continued the artist – Many people feel uncomfortable having oral sex, others have been inhibited from liking themselves because their partner has criticized their bodies. These discomforts do not emerge in everyday conversations, not even with closest friends ».

Cock-a-doodle create space to share these experiences in a more accessible way. Unlike the usual macho depictions of the phallus, Indu’s art is subtle, with figurative illustrations rich in bold detail and a four-panel comic book format narrative storyline. Black, white and a hint of red are the only colors that populate the works of art.

«I would like people to participate in the project without feeling shame or fear – said Indu – Unlike traditional sex education courses where the flow of information is one-way, this project allows you to enter history and be an active part of it. For the participants, sharing their experiences was liberating ».

Indu is looking for more penis stories to add to his project. “I’d like to read gods too tips on how to do a good fellatio – comments Indu – And learn the ways in which people feel pleasure or play when they have sex ». So, if you have experiences to share, write them to @induviduality.
