“Temporary city” for people left homeless by floods opens in RS; see photos of the place

This Thursday (4), the government of Rio Grande do Sul inaugurates the first of the “temporary cities” that will receive part of those left homeless by the floods that hit the state last month.

The first Humanitarian Reception Center (CHA) is located in Canoas, in the metropolitan region of Porto Alegre.

The site will have the capacity to house 630 people in 126 modular homes. According to the state government, the center also has bathrooms, a cafeteria, a communal laundry, a nursery, a changing room, a medical post, 24-hour police, multipurpose areas and spaces for children and pets.

People in shelters will also have free access to wireless internet and electricity.

The modular homes were donated by the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) and were assembled with the help of Brazilian Army personnel. Each home is 17 square meters.

The units are equipped with bunk beds, double beds and cribs, according to the needs of each family.

The site occupies an area of ​​30 thousand square meters and took a month to complete. Land preparation began on June 4th.

A bus line will serve the region to transport residents. The free pass remains in effect on the municipal transport network of Canoas

Families housed at the center will come from three temporary shelters. The first shelters must meet the following requirements released by the state government:

• If the family is single-parent (if it has children and only one parent);
• If there are elderly people in the family;
• If there are people with disabilities (PcD);
• If there are pregnant women in the family;
• If there are people with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) in the family;
• Number of family members;
• Specificities of each family, in order to ensure adequate support for the most vulnerable.
