At least ten people have died in a landslide that occurred in a quarry in southwestern Zambia, as the country’s authorities announced yesterday. The accident occurred during mining activities, resulting in the crushing of several people, said Charity Munganga, head of the police directorate in Zambia’s Central Province. Six minors were rescued, while nine bodies were recovered. One injured person later succumbed to his injuries, bringing the death toll to ten, police said. Authorities are trying to determine the exact number of people who were in the quarry at the time of the landslide. In mineral-rich Zambia, accidents are often at unlicensed quarries that do not meet safety regulations. President Hakaide Hichilema expressed his sadness at the tragedy, underscoring his concern for the lives lost due to illegal mining activities. *file photo Source: APE
