To “establish peace”, Russia began sending troops to regions of Ukraine, after President Vladimir Putin recognized the independence and sovereignty of two breakaway regions: the People’s Republic of Donetsk and the People’s Republic of Luhansk. In an emergency meeting at the United Nations Security Council, the United States called the action “absurd” and said that the consequences of an invasion would be dire for the entire world.
