China’s Taiwan Affairs Office has threatened retaliation for Taiwan President Tsai Ing-wen’s visit to the United States on Wednesday.
Zhu Fenglian, spokesman for China’s Taiwan Affairs Office, said at a press conference that “if he contacts US House Speaker McCarthy, it will be another provocation that seriously violates the one-China principle, harms China’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, and destroys peace and stability in the Strait of Taiwan. We are strongly opposed to it and will definitely take steps to resolutely counterattack“.
In response, Reuters has quoted senior US officials as saying that “China shouldn’t overreact to Taiwan president’s transit“.
Additional comments
“The planned transit of the Taiwanese president is consistent with long-term US practice.”
“Urges China to keep communication channels open“.
“I don’t see any reason for Beijing to overreact.”
“China’s attempts to upset Taiwan’s status quo will not pressure the US to change it“.
