THE North Korea launched a “ballistic missile of an unknown type” today, continuing a series of record-breaking weapons tests in recent weeks, South Korea’s National Defense General Staff announced.
According to the staff, the missile was fired in the direction of the East Sea, or Sea of Japan as Tokyo calls it, and had a short effective range
Tensions on the Korean peninsula have skyrocketed this year. Nuclear-armed North Korea has carried out an unprecedented number of weapons tests, including intercontinental ballistic missiles, in defiance of UN Security Council resolutions barring it from developing ballistic missiles.
Its officials South Korea and the USA have been warning for months that the Pyongyang possibly preparing for a nuclear weapon test, the first since 2017 and the seventh in its history, an assessment that was also recently shared by the head of the International Atomic Energy Agency, as reported by international agencies and relayed by the Athens News Agency.
