Teresa Cristina will lead a program about samba on TV Brasil

The Samba na Gamboa program premieres its new season on December 8th, at 1pm, on TV Brasil. This year’s main novelty is in charge of the attraction: singer and songwriter Teresa Cristina. She takes the place of fellow singer Diogo Nogueira, presenter of the program for seven seasons, in recordings that took place between 2008 and 2018.

In the circle there will be renowned artists of Brazilian music, such as Áurea Martins, Dorina, Dudu Nobre, Jorge Aragão, Moacyr Luz, Nei Lopes, Tia Surica, Marquinhos de Oswaldo Cruz, Neguinho da Beija-Flor, Nelson Rufino, Nilze Carvalho and Sombrinha. The guest of the first episode is Zeca Pagodinho, who will perform his main sambas.

The next two attractions on the program are Xande de Pilares and Leci Brandão. In addition to samba artists, other MPB artists will participate in the attraction: Adriana Calcanhotto, Fabiana Cozza, Hermínio Bello de Carvalho, Mônica Salmaso, Simone Mazzer and Zé Renato.

“Samba na Gamboa is back with all its glory, color and strength. The episodes will certainly touch the audience in some way. We managed to select artists that include Brazilian music. A transparent, honest, sincere program. And I’m sure that the Brazilian family will love getting together around a table, on a Sunday, at a time very close to lunchtime to watch it. So, it is a program that will bring a lot of joy to the Brazilian people”, said presenter Teresa Cristina.

According to the director of Content and Programming at Empresa Brasil de Comunicação (EBC), Antonia Pellegrino, the new presenter represents the female and black ancestry of samba, often relegated to a background.

“When we took on this management last year, an agenda of representation and greater diversity was set in Brazil. And it is the role of public TV to promote this type of reflection. Samba is still a very masculine space. And our desire to anchor the program was to bring a black woman who was into samba. From this, we arrived at Teresa Cristina, a black samba singer, researcher, extremely cultured, who knows a lot about samba. Who lives, breathes and sweats samba”, he said.

New season will pay homage to classics and underrated names

Samba na Gamboa also features a series of programs with thematic content that honors the work of Arlindo Cruz, Chico Buarque and Paulinho da Viola. And tributes to other artists who have died, such as Aldir Blanc, Almir Guineto, Beth Carvalho, Candeia, Clara Nunes, Dona Ivone Lara, Elizeth Cardoso, Elton Medeiros, Lupicínio Rodrigues, Monarco, Nelson Cavaquinho, Nelson Sargento, Reinaldo, Wilson Moreira and Zé Keti.

The new season of the program will have 52 episodes, airing weekly on Sundays. The recordings were made at the Ruth de Souza Theater, in Parque Glória Maria, in Santa Teresa, central region of Rio de Janeiro. The stage is a colorful setting that evokes a square in Gamboa, a historic neighborhood in the port area of the capital of Rio de Janeiro.

“The program gave me the opportunity to do what I like, which is to show people the best of samba, the best of Brazil, which is a rich and plural culture,” said Teresa Cristina.

“Throughout the program, you will notice that we are interviewing artists that we all know, but also other names that have been on the road for a long time, but have no space in the media. Brazil needs to know a samba singer called Bico Doce, who is from Mangueira, deserves to know the story of Nilza Carvalho, a samba singer with a 50-year career, as well as Luísa Dionísio, from Marina Íris. And artists like Nego Alvaro, from Samba do Trabalhador, Mingo Silva, Moacyr Luz, Serginho Meriti”.
