Cláudio Natividade, a palliative patient due to metastatic kidney cancer, and Raimunda Natividade, his wife, performed the dream of getting married on Saturday morning (18). In celebration of life the wedding took place in the chapel of the Hospital Regional de Santa Maria (HRSM), in the Federal District.
The couple who has been together for 35 years was attended by family, friends and hospital staff, all emotional with the celebration of love .
The desire to formalize the love story of the couple always came from Raimunda, but the request came from Claudius . The patient who is under palliative care due to metastatic renal neoplasia, a disease known as kidney cancer that has spread to other parts of the body told the medical team that he would like to make his beloved’s dream come true. “Even in our fragility, he wanted to seal our love. And here we are, making our dream come true,” said the bride.
The ceremony was organized over three days by the HRSM multidisciplinary team, which transformed the chapel into an environment that could be up to the love of Claudio and Raimunda . The party featured flowers, rugs, lamps, souvenirs, snacks, cake, sweets and also sparkling wine for the toast of those present.
The palliative nurse Leonizia Lima, one of the creators of the event, alongside the emergency manager, Dr. Felipe Augusto de Oliveira, and the palliative doctor, Dr. Brunna Adriana Rezende were responsible for the party. “When we found out about their wishes, we wanted to provide something special, even in such a delicate moment,” said Leonizia.
In style, Claudio entered the chapel, accompanied by his daughter, wheelchair and with special clothing . Raimunda, with a traditional white dress bride and alongside her husband’s eldest son.
“The heart pounded. It was the most beautiful moment of my life”, confessed Cláudio, with tears in his eyes after exchanging rings with Raimunda. “It meant union, sharing and eternal love. We are very happy for this moment”, completed the bride.
Love spread throughout the chapel and staff said they felt part of the couple’s story. “We felt like we were part of something bigger,” said Leonizia.
This was the first wedding held at HRSM. “This wedding was a milestone. It shows that, while there is life, there is space to celebrate and dream”, highlighted Doctor Felipe. “It was a lesson in empathy and humanity. Small gestures, like this wedding, show that care goes beyond physical health. It’s about taking care of the soul”, added Dr. Brunna
