Terrible hail storm in Spain kills a baby and leaves 50 injured

A 20-month-old girl died after being hit on the head during a violent hailstorm that caused dozens of injuries and countless material damages in Catalonia, Spain.

On August 30, the inhabitants of Girona and its provinces were surprised by a sudden and violent storm that only lasted 15 minutes, but managed to cause enormous damage in that short time.

The little girl, whose nationality and identity have not yet been made public, was in the town of La Bisbal del Ampurdán when she received the fatal impact on the head minutes after the storm began. The baby was admitted to the Josep Trueta hospital in Girona, where she died the following day due to severe head trauma.

Local media reported that at least 50 people were injured by hailstones the size of a fist and up to four inches in diameter, which caused injuries, mostly broken bones and bruises.

For her part, the accidental mayor of Bisbal del Ampurdán, Carme Vall, stated that several buildings and cars were also damaged by the hailstorm. According to the Government of Catalonia, the storm is the strongest in the region in the last twenty years. No deaths from hail have been recorded in Europe since 1997.
