Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said Wednesday’s helicopter crash in a town on the outskirts of Kiev was a “terrible tragedy” that caused “indescribable” pain.
He confirmed that at least 15 people were killed, including three children and the country’s interior minister, when the aircraft crashed into the territory of a kindergarten in the town of Brovary, causing a fire there.
Local officials had previously put the death toll at 18. Zelensky said the exact number of casualties was being established.
“I instructed the Security Service of Ukraine, in cooperation with the National Police of Ukraine and other authorized bodies, to find out all the circumstances of what happened,” he said on the Telegram messaging app.
“So far, three children have died. The pain is indescribable,” he wrote, offering his condolences to the friends and family of the victims.
