The quake measured 7.5, according to the Japan Meteorological Agency, or 7.4, according to the US Geological Survey, and 7.2, according to the Taiwan Meteorological Agency. It caused hundreds of injuries and a tsunami warning for southern Japan and the Philippines, which was subsequently issued. In the Philippines, the Seismological Service issued a warning to residents of coastal areas in several provinces urging them to move to higher altitude. Several small tsunami waves reached parts of Okinawa Prefecture in the south.
