Terrorism: Macron will receive the Austrian chancellor on Tuesday for a European mini-summit

 

More than a week after the attack in Vienna which left four dead, Emmanuel Macron will receive Austrian Chancellor Sebastian Kurz at the Elysee Palace on Tuesday 10 November, before a videoconference at 3 p.m. on the European response to the terrorist threat with Chancellor Angela Merkel, Council President Charles Michel and Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, the Élysée announced on Monday.

This videoconference, organized a week after the jihadist attack in Vienna and after that in Nice and the beheading of Samuel Paty in France in October, will bring together Emmanuel Macron and Sebastian Kurz in Paris, Chancellor Angela Merkel in Berlin as well as the President of the Council. European Charles Michel and the President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen in Brussels. It will be followed by a joint press conference with several of the participants, said the French presidency.

“The European response to terrorism” on the menu of discussions

Last Monday, a sympathizer of the jihadist group Islamic State opened fire in central Vienna, killing four people, in the first such attack in decades in Austria. It was part of the context of a resurgence of jihadist threats since the republication in France by the satirical weekly Charlie Hebdo caricatures of Muhammad. Charles Michel and Clément Beaune, French Secretary of State for European Affairs, were both expected in Vienna on Monday to pay tribute to the victims of the attack.

They were also to discuss from Monday with Sebastian Kurz “the European response to terrorism, in particular the strengthening of controls at European external borders, the Schengen treaty and the fight against online hatred at European level”, according to the French Embassy. in Austria.

Thursday, Emmanuel Macron has already announced that he wants to double the control forces at French borders and called for “in-depth” reform of the rules governing the Schengen area of ​​free movement in Europe, believing that the fight against illegal immigration makes part of the fight against terrorism. The French president intends to present the first proposals in this direction to the European Council in December, with the objective “to succeed under the French presidency” in the first half of 2022.
