Tesla Chief Executive Elon Musk said on Friday that the automaker could cut car prices if inflation eased.
Musk, who has more than 100 million Twitter followers, was responding to a tweet asking if the company had plans to cut prices the automaker has raised because of the pandemic and supply chain problems.
“If inflation calms down, we can lower car prices,” Musk replied.
Tesla has raised car prices several times in recent months by a few thousand dollars as costs rise for raw materials like aluminum and lithium, used in cars and batteries, as automakers struggle to get chips and other supplies given shortages across the industry.
Musk, the world’s richest person, has warned in recent weeks of the risk of a recession and said he has “super bad feeling” about the economy.
US consumer inflation jumped to 9.1% in June, the highest annual rate in more than four decades, under pressure from gas, food and rent prices. The data represents difficult times for companies now looking to cut costs and alter their hiring plans.
