The head of Panasonic’s battery division, Kazuo Tadanobu, has unveiled the new 4680 battery, claiming that it has five times the capacity of the previous smaller model. He said the battery was designed to meet Tesla’s needs and that Panasonic plans to supply it to the American electric vehicle manufacturer.
Kazuo Tadanobu said Panasonic plans to start trial production of 4680 battery cells in Japan by March 2022. Tesla already announced in October that it plans to start using 4680 batteries in its vehicles next year. Tesla CEO Elon Musk said the new batteries will fit more power into a small package, making electric vehicles more powerful and long-range.
Panasonic has been supplying batteries for Tesla vehicles for over a decade, and the two companies have jointly invested in the Tesla Gigafactory in Nevada. After years of losses, Panasonic said the venture was now profitable for the company.
