Tesla is hiring 500 to 600 people a month at its Gruenheide plant and is working in partnership with the national employment agency to recruit laid-off workers from German automakers, Brandenburg’s regional economy minister said on Monday. .
A total of 4,100 to 4,500 staff have been hired so far, Minister Joerg Steinbach told a conference, with around 10% foreigners, mainly from Poland.
“The plight of automakers in other regions who have realized that producing electric cars requires fewer people than in the past is helping us because we are trying to bring them here to Brandenburg,” Steinbach said.
The Gruenheide plant has been operating in two shifts since May 23, with a third scheduled to start before the end of the year, he added.
Tesla did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
The automaker’s chief executive, Elon Musk, told employees in early June that the company would reduce the number of salaried employees by 10% as it became “overstaffed in many areas”, but later added on Twitter that ” the number of employees per hour will increase”.
